How To Keep Your Reception Going After The Music Cut-Off

The cut-off does not have to end the night. It only has to end the speakers — and the handover takes about five minutes if you plan it.

Agree the plan with the venue

Confirm by email that a headphone disco may run after amplified music stops, and until what time guests can stay in the room. Ask your coordinator to note it on the running sheet so the duty manager on the night already knows.

Make the switch a moment, not a gap

Announce the afterparty from the microphone during the last amplified song, with the headphone cases already open and staffed. Momentum is everything: a two-minute silence loses half the room to the bar or a taxi.

Run the last two hours

Set one channel as the main channel so there is always a shared song to sing to, and let guests find the other two themselves. Take the headphones off during one big chorus — the room singing with no music is the clip everyone films.

Common questions

How do we keep the party going after the DJ has to stop?

Switch to silent disco headphones. Announce it during the last amplified song, hand headphones out at the same time, and the dancefloor carries on with no gap.
